The barreleye (Winteria telescopa) is a small species of deep-sea fish found in both Endless Ocean and Endless Ocean 2.
It gets its common name and its species name, telescopa, from its large, tube-shaped eyes. These eyes evolved specifically to allow for vision in even the darkest parts of the ocean.

Endless Ocean
Description
"These fish have long, narrow bodies and large, cylindrical eyes. Dark brown in color, they can be seen year-round in deeper, darker parts of the ocean.
Little is known about these mysterious fish, and scientists are not even sure what they eat. The most popular theory is that they feed on small creatures and jellyfish by sucking them into their tube-like mouths.
This species has long, highly-developed eyes facing upward at a diagonal slant. Among fish related to this species, there are some with eyes that face completely up and others with four eyes instead of two."
Endless Ocean 2
Description
"This fish has particularly well-developed eyes; they are large, protruding and cylindrical, and look upwards at an angle. Other fish of this species have eyes that look directly upwards and some even have four eyes."
Location
Endless Ocean
Barreleyes can be seen in the Abyss, mostly on the floors and walls in the caves around the area, such as the the Secret Cave, the Crystal Cave, the Fiend's Cave, and the Unnamed Cave, as well as on the walls of the Abyss itself.
Endless Ocean 2
Barreleyes can be found under glow spots around the Zahhab Region Depths, usually in small groups.
Behavior
These are found under zoom-mode glows, by themselves or in small groups. They can occasionally be found with a humpback anglerfish. They like being fed.

Real-Life Information
- While this fish is simply referred to as a "barreleye" in-game, that name actually refers to the entire Opisthoproctidae family[1][2]. A more frequent common name for this specific species is the binocular fish[3][4].
- The second game reports that "other fish of this species" have eyes that face directly upwards, and some have four eyes; this is incorrect. The first game, however, is accurate in reporting that fish related to W. telescopa have a wide array of eye configurations, adapted specifically for utilizing tiny amounts of light in the deepest parts of the ocean[10][11].
- Though the Abyss in the first game only goes down to 500 feet (165 meters) in depth, and the Zahhab Region Depths in the second game to 570 feet (174 meters), neither of these are deep enough to be an accurate habitat for W. telescopa. In reality, this fish makes its home at depths from 1300 to 8200 feet (400 to 2500 meters)[14][15].
- This species was first described by German zoologist August Bernhard Brauer in the year 1901[15]. The genus name Winteria honors scientific illustrator Friedrich Wilhelm "Fritz" Winter, while the specific epithet telescopa is a remark upon the unique eyes of the fish[16][17].
- A species of barreleye also makes an appearance in Animal Crossing: New Horizons[20]. However, it is not Winteria telescopa; instead, it is the more widely-known Macropinna microstoma.
- The majority of knowledge about W. telescopa comes from preserved specimens[21].
