Not to be confused with the porcupinefish.

The blackspotted pufferfish (Arothron nigropunctatus) is a species of pufferfish found in both Endless Ocean and Endless Ocean 2.

It is a species of coral-reef fish named both for its coloration and for its ability to inflate itself by swallowing water. If eaten when prepared improperly, it is incredibly poisonous.

In-Game[]

Marine Encyclopedia[]

Endless Ocean[]

Description[]

"These unusual-looking fish are quite round and lack any sort of pelvic fin. They are usually grey with black spots and can be seen near Blue Holes in the spring.

These fish come in a variety of colors, including a bright, cheery yellow. No matter what color the body is, however, the dark speckled markings remain constant across the species. Some people think that these fish resemble dogs if you look at them head-on.

When startled, they suck in water, which makes them swell up and causes their spines to stand on end. Although they usually swim at a very leisurely pace, they are capable of moving quite quickly over short distances when threatened."

Endless Ocean 2[]

Description[]

"This round fish’s face looks a little like a dog’s from the front. It can be grey or yellow but it is always covered in black spots. When startled, it draws water into its stomach, inflating itself and making countless tiny spines on its body stand up. Although it usually swims at a leisurely pace, it is capable of short bursts of speed when it feels threatened."

Location[]

Endless Ocean[]

Blackspotted pufferfish can be found near Blue Holes in the springtime, though there are a few scattered around the Great Aqua Cave that can be seen there year-round.

Endless Ocean 2[]

A small group of blackspotted pufferfish can be found in the North Canyon, at coordinates G-1 and G-2.

Behavior[]

The blackspotted pufferfish floats around slowly close to the sea floor; they do not react to the player's presence. They like being fed, although they will puff up threateningly if touched.

Notes[]

Real-Life Information[]

  • Both in-game descriptions note the blackspotted puffer resembling a dog. This is also noted in some of its other common names: some examples are Arothron dog face puffer or dog-face puffer[1][2]. It is also sometimes called the black-spotted toadfish[3].
    • Its species name, nigropunctatus, means "black-spotted".
  • Both games make note of the color variation in this fish beneath its black spots. These reports are accurate; they can range from bluish-grey to brown, yellow or even black[2][4][5]. Multicolored fish have also been found[6][7]. Some sources report that this depends on the fish's age[1][8]. Others say that it can change based on environment as well[3].
    • It shares many aspects of its appearance with a closely-related species of pufferfish that does not appear in either of the Endless Ocean games, called Arothron meleagris, or the Guineafowl puffer[9].
  • Like other pufferfish, this fish's signature defensive move is to inhale water, which makes it much larger and makes all of the spines on its body stick out[5][10]. Another way it defends itself is by secreting toxins from its skin if it feels threatened, which can injure and even kill the fish in the water around it[11]. It is also poisonous to eat, and eating it can be fatal if the wrong parts of it are consumed, but the meat is famously consumed by humans anyway in the form of a Japanese delicacy called fugu[12]. The poison it contains is called tetrodotoxin, and is incredibly potent; it is 1,200 times more lethal than cyanide[13].
    • Its cousin the porcupinefish shares many of these defense mechanisms.
  • True to its in-game description, the blackspotted puffer is generally a slow-moving species that may display small bursts of speed if it needs to escape[8][14][15].
  • The blackspotted puffer has powerful teeth that are fused together in a beaklike shape that it uses to feed on live coral[4][16]. It also eats sponges, mollusks, crustaceans, and algae[2][3]. It is sometimes kept in captivity, but it may eat smaller tankmates[8].
    • If in a tank, the blackspotted puffer's teeth may grow too large for it, unless it is provided with surfaces on which to grind them, or if its owner does not grind them manually[10].
    • This puffer is a moderately popular aquarium fish, known for being intelligent and personable[5]. However, when first introduced to a tank, it may be quite shy[11].
