The Marine Encyclopedia is an interactable object on Nineball Island's table in Endless Ocean 2. It allows the player to access detailed information about any species of creatures they have previously focused on, organized into various categories.

The amount of entries in the encyclopedia totals 352 (326 excluding legendary creatures). Excluding creatures with multiple entries, such as young or gendered counterparts, this brings the total number of creatures in the game to 340.

Compared to Endless Ocean's encyclopedia, this encyclopedia has many more entries. However, entries are generally shorter and less detailed than those seen in Endless Ocean: most creatures have only one piece of information, as opposed to the three entries given to all creatures in the first game.

A title is awarded for filling out the entire encyclopedia, as well as for every fifth of the encyclopedia completed.

Menu[]

Interacting with the marine encyclopedia makes the player open it, which will bring them to a page in which they can select a category of creature to view. Upon doing so, and pressing the Wii A Button button while hovering the cursor over a specific creature in the encyclopedia, the player enters the selected creature's encyclopedia entry. From here, the player can either select the open book icon to view more information about the species, select the fish icon to rotate the creature's model, or use the arrows to the left and right of the screen to view a different creature.

When viewing more information on the species, the tabs at the top of the screen can be used to navigate between sections of the creature's encyclopedia entry. The tab with a book icon details basic information about the creature, the tab with a magnifying glass icon maps out where the creature is located on every stage, and the tab with a pencil icon displays additional trivia about the creature, though only for certain species. If the species has trivia which has yet to be unlocked, the tab will appear greyed out.

To unlock a creature's trivia, the player must focus on the creature and perform a certain action. Which action must be performed depends on the creature, but the four possibilities are:

Categories[]

In Endless Ocean 2, the Marine Encyclopedia is divided into eight categories, each containing particular types of creatures:

  • Coral-Reef Life houses colorful fish commonly found in coral reef environments, such as the emperor angelfish.
  • Small Marine Life houses creatures found under glow spots, such as the false clown anemonefish.
  • Large Marine Life houses a wide variety of creatures generally around a meter or longer in length, such as the great white shark.
  • Dolphins and Whales houses several species of cetacean, such as the bottlenose dolphin.
  • Deep-Sea Life houses species of deep-sea creatures, such as the giant squid.
  • Shore Life houses species of birds, penguins, seals and other similar creatures found ashore, such as the emperor penguin.
  • Freshwater Life houses species of creatures found only in the Cortica River, such as the spectacled caiman.
  • Other Fauna houses creatures that do not fall under any other specific category, such as various species of sea star, sea slugs, jellyfish, legendary creatures, and more.

Notes[]

  • Several creatures have different, more detailed versions of their textures for use solely in the encyclopedia.
  • All six of the creatures featured on the cover of the marine encyclopedia are tropical schooling fish introduced in Endless Ocean 2. They are the purple queen, female sea goldie, king angelfish, speckled butterflyfish, yellowband angelfish, and swallowtail sea perch.
  • The marine encyclopedia has two different textures used for its cover: one is lower-resolution and seen on the table, and the other is higher resolution and seen when the encyclopedia opens after selecting it.
    • The text on these two textures do not match up perfectly. The lower resolution one reads "THE WORLD ENCYCLOPEDIA" where the higher resolution one simply reads "ENCYCLOPEDIA". Additionally, the author written on the lower resolution one reads "HIROSHI CHIBA" backwards - the name of the person who likely made the texture - which was replaced on the higher resolution cover with "ARIKA NINTEN", a reference to the game's developer and publisher.
  • The pictures used for several of the marine encyclopedia categories come from early on in the game's development.
    • The "Coral-Reef Life" section's photo includes an oriental butterflyfish school in the Atoll Gate, with the creature's old texture used in Endless Ocean. It also uses the water color seen in Manoa Lai.
    • The "Small Marine Life" section's photo shows a zoom background unused in the final game.
    • The "Large Marine Life" section's photo uses the water color seen in Manoa Lai.
    • The "Dolphins and Whales" section's photo uses the water color seen in Manoa Lai.
  • The small text under each marine encyclopedia category's photo is lifted from various different loading screens from Endless Ocean.
