The Marine Encyclopedia is an interactable object in the cabin of the Gabbiano in Endless Ocean. It allows the player to access detailed information about any species of creatures they have previously interacted with.
The encyclopedia is unlocked early in the game's story, after surfacing from the player's second dive, in which they are taught how to focus on and befriend creatures. Katherine explains that it's her work-in-progress, and gives the player access to it so they can fill it in with the information they learn.
The amount of entries in the encyclopedia totals 214 (212 excluding legendary creatures).
Menu
Interacting with the encyclopedia will open it to either its first page, or if the player has just closed it, to the page they left off on. Pressing the button while hovering the cursor over a specific creature overlays the selected creature's first encyclopedia entry on the page. When viewing more information on the species, the book icons to the left of the entry can be used to navigate between the creature's separate entries, if unlocked.
Each creature detailed within the marine encyclopedia has up to three entries for it, which are unlocked by interacting with the given creature in a way it is receptive to. Only one entry can be unlocked per day, meaning that the player must wait until an in-game day has passed, and encounter the creature again to get a new entry for it.
Each creature has preferred methods of interaction, which are used to gain its encyclopedia information. The interactions that creatures can respond to are:
- Touching them
- Feeding them
- Using the underwater pen near them
- Using the sea whistle near them
Depending on the creature, some methods of interaction will take either a very long time, or will never work at all. If one method is taking too long to unlock the creature's information, it is recommended to try another, and see if that works better.
Categories
The Marine Encyclopedia is broken up into six categories, indicated by the text seen in the top left corner of the page.
- Coral Dwellers is, rather obviously, for fish that dwell in coral-reef environments, like the oriental butterflyfish, clown triggerfish, and luna lionfish.
- Small Fish & Creatures is for a wide array of creatures that can be found under zoom glows, like the sea star, leafy seadragon, and firefly squid.
- Large Fish & Creatures is for large, non-cetacean creatures, like the humphead wrasse, green sea turtle, and Nomura's jellyfish.
- Deep-Sea Dwellers is for creatures that are found in deep-sea environments, as suggested by the category name - this includes animals like the coelecanth, giant siphonophore, and giant squid.
- Dolphins & Whales is where the player can find information about the various dolphins and whales that reside all over the Manoa Lai region, such as the bottlenose dolphin, Orca, and humpback whale.
- Coastal Dwellers is the category for creatures that can appear on the Gabbiano, like the California sea lion, polar bear, and African penguin. The West Indian manatee is a notable exception, as they never leave the water, but is still in this section.
At the end of the encyclopedia are the game's two legendary creatures, with each having a full page spread dedicated to them. Each are labelled as being in the category of the standard creature they are closest to.
Dialogue
After the player's second dive, and after interacting with an African penguin on The Gabbiano, Katherine will discuss how she knows what animals are saying, and then introduce the marine encyclopedia:
Katherine: "Sooooo...yeah. Let's talk about something else. Did I tell you I'm writing a Marine Biology Encyclopedia? I thought maybe you'd like to help out with it. The more you can learn, the better the encyclopedia will be. So try to learn new stuff, OK? You'll need to get familiar with marine life to fill the encyclopedia. It's waiting in the cabin, so take a look when you feel like it."
After the player has successfully obtained all three entries for every animal in the marine encyclopedia, Katherine will approach them excitedly:
Katherine: "You're AMAZING! You've actually researched every single life-form in Manoa Lai! This is an unbelievable accomplishment! No one's ever done that before. You're like the official marine biology professor of Manoa Lai."
"Oh, hey. I got a message from the aquarium. They're very interested in your discovery of the Ancient Mother. But this kind of thing is a little out of their element. It's not like they have an Ancient Mother expert on staff or anything. And since you're the most knowledgeable person on whale biology right now… Would you mind helping them out? Try to visit the aquarium soon, OK?"
A message will then pop up once she finishes speaking:
You can now place the Ancient Mother in your aquarium.
Though it goes un-announced in-game, the player is also able to place Magu Tapa in the aquarium, with the same unlocking method as all other creatures.
