Cavern of the Gods is the final sub-stage unlocked in Endless Ocean 2. The lost temple of the Okeanides, serving as the tomb of the civilization's last queen, these ruins were seemingly lost forever until they were eventually rediscovered by L&L Diving Service during Endless Ocean 2's plot. It is the resting place of the legendary Pacifica Treasure, as well as the key to and origin of the Song of Dragons.

This stage introduces strong water currents reminiscent of those found in Endless Ocean's Underwater Ruins of Mo'ia Atoll, which limit exploration during the events of the plot. These currents dissipate after the stage has been re-opened. Its corresponding story segment is also the only instance in the series in which the player can die, resulting in a game-over that resets the player to one of several checkpoints, depending on their current progress.

Unlike most other sub-stages in the game, Cavern of the Gods does not have its own vocal theme. Instead, Celtic Woman's "The Last Rose of Summer", originally heard in the Zahhab Region Depths, is played after the player first discovers the Subterranean Reception Room, and "Carrickfergus" plays when the player re-enters the Treasure Room after re-opening the ruins.

Spots

Stone Cavern Exit

Due to the strong currents preventing the player from exiting the ruins, this spot cannot be visited during the plot. It is a barren area, marking the area in which the player can swim in order to return to the Zahhab Region main stage in the Stone Cavern Entrance.

Pillars of Light

This ten-story-high room represents sunrise and life, as evidenced by the lively and majestic animals that inhabit it, those being the numerous Singing Dragons (found here exclusively during the day) and Commerson's dolphins. As the counterpoint to the Pillars of Shadow, it is located directly opposite them. This is where L&L initially make their escape during the first trip to the Cavern of the Gods, as the ruins are collapsing. The Serpens Coin is found on the floor here. The Celestial Mausoleum connects this spot at the top with the Pillars of Shadow.

Pillars of Shadow

Pillars of Shadow

The Pillars of Shadow.

This enormous room is located in the western half of the Cavern and represents sunset and death, as symbolized by the ancient and dangerous creatures that inhabit it. Reaching ten stories tall, it is full of coelacanths, including a special coelacanth which appears after the cavern's re-opening, as well as goblin sharks at night, accompanied by their leader. The Celestial Mausoleum connects this spot with the Pillars of Light.

Celestial Mausoleum

This square room located at the highest point in the cavern is relatively devoid of life outside of the main story. During the plot, L&L encounter the Okeanos's Guardian here for a sort of final boss battle, as well as the newly-discovered Singing Dragons.

Treasure Room

Though not given an official name in-game, this golden room is the final resting place of the Pacifica Treasure and the last queen of the Okeanides. It is first opened after the Singing Dragons respond to the call of the Dragon Flute, only for L&L Diving Service to flee before they can get their hands on it. Once the Cavern has been excavated, the team ultimately decide to leave the treasure alone. The Ocean Treasure can be salvaged here after re-opening the cavern, as well as the final befriendable dolphin in the "Be the Best Trainer" quest.

Story Significance

Cavern of the Gods is where the final chapter of the story takes place, in which L&L uncover the mystery of the Song of Dragons and the Pacifica Treasure.

Plot Synopsis
GG, Hayako, Oceana, and the player begin swimming into the Cavern of the Gods after GG points out the entrance. Before they can enter, the Song of Dragons plays from inside the ruins, and a sudden current sweeps them into the Cavern.

When they are inside, the Cavern of the Gods’ introduction cutscene plays. Afterwards, Hayako notes that the current that swept the team into the Cavern is too strong for them to swim back out.

The only way the player can swim is straight ahead to a mural, and they are given the option to play the Dragon Flute or the Sea Whistle. The Dragon Flute causes the Song of Dragons to play. Nothing appears to happen, but the team realized Hayako has vanished, and cannot be reached with the radio. Jean-Eric realizes the currents must have shifted, opening a pathway for the player to swim to the Altar of Nephthys.

Nephthys

When the player plays the Dragon Flute at the Altar of Nephthys, the Song of Dragons plays and the currents shift again. GG vanishes in the same way as Hayako, and a path opens to the Altar of Osiris.

At the Altar of Osiris, the player can play the Dragon Flute again. The Song of Dragons plays and the currents shift again. Oceana is swept down the corridor by a strong current. When the player leaves the Altar of Osiris, the current sweeps them into the Altar of Horus, where GG, Hayako and Oceana are waiting.

Playing the Dragon Flute at the Altar of Horus causes the currents to vanish, and the team return to the entrance room, where the radio will begin working again.

Hayako reads the mural on the wall, which states that:

"My descendants must pass through the underworld and reach the hallowed realm to find the treasure. Only the holy metal of Magnesia can open the gate to the underworld."

GG then rotates the metal symbol held by the statue in the altar, which opens the Subterranean Reception Room; the player can swim through it and into the Altar of Isis.

The player can proceed onward to another mural, which reads:

"To my descendants who seek treasure, you will be tried by the dead ones. The last ray of the sinking sun is the key that opens the gate to the underworld."

Hayako notes that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west; on the westernmost wall, there is a sparkling stone that looks as though it can be pushed in. This opens up the wall into the Pillars of Shadow.

Pillars of Shadow

Jean-Eric notes that sonar indicates another, smaller room above the Pillars of Shadow (the Celestial Mausoleum). There is a massive stone door leading into the room, which GG begins to open; at this point, several goblin sharks appear, which the player must calm with the Pulsar to buy GG time to open the door.

After swimming into the doorway, the player will have the option to pause the quest if they want to replenish their air or get better diving gear.

Once the player proceeds into the Mausoleum, Hayako translates the wall mural; she notes that the Okeanides left the Pacifica Treasure for their descendants, with the Dragon Flute acting as both a map and a key. The mural also says that the flute must be offered to “the three suns of morning, noon and night”, and the “Singing Dragon will appear and open the door to the treasure.”

Celestial Mausoleum

The player can play the Dragon Flute in front of the largest mural, which causes Okeanos’s Guardian and two smaller goblin sharks to appear; Okeanos’s Guardian uses its tail to activate a mechanism that seals the entrances to the room, trapping everyone inside.

The player must then place the three pieces of the Dragon Flute in front of three statues in the room (a scarab, a falcon, and a ram). The sharks remain in the room, and the player can use the Pulsar to subdue them; however, after the player places a piece of the Dragon Flute in front of any of the statues, they will shake off the Pulsar’s effects and need to be pulsed again.

After this, the Song of Dragons will play, and the doors of the Mausoleum will open. The door opposite the one the team entered through will also open, and a Singing Dragon will swim through, scaring off the goblin sharks. The Song of Dragons begins to echo throughout the ruins; the team deduces that many whales are singing it at once. Oceana mentions that all of the places they’ve previously heard the Song of Dragons are all large, enclosed spaces where sound can easily echo.

To open the last door in the Celestial Mausoleum, the player must rotate the stone pedestal in the middle of the room. Once it is rotated, the song changes - Hayako realizes that the entire structure is a giant Sea Whistle.

Pacifica Treasure

At this point, the whales in the Cavern all begin slamming into the walls and pillars, and the Singing Dragon in the Mausoleum rams into the last unopened door, forcing it open; inside is the Pacifica Treasure. However, the team only gets to admire it for a few moments, because the other whales in the Cavern are making the structure unstable.

Hayako reasons that the Song of Dragons was a command to open the door, and instructs the player to rotate the pedestal again to stop it; however, this does nothing, and Jean-Eric comes over the radio to instruct the team to escape. The player has a ten minute timer to escape the cavern.

Trying to get out the same way they had entered prompts the player to note that the currents are too strong. A mysterious voice then comes over the radio:

"...[Player name]...go...room...opposite side

...can reach...from highest point...another room...of pillars…

...that side...that room...should be...exit...one of the walls…

...has to...somewhere...there…"

Going back through the Celestial Mausoleum and into the Pillars of Light leads the team to a mural on the wall. However, Hayako says it’s the same mural as the one near the entrance, so there is no helpful information.

The mysterious voice returns, describing an ancient myth about Set:

"...find...Set... ...Set...killed his mother...childbirth...god of darkness

...Okeanides empire...ruined...by the people of Set

...door of the sun...must open...by Set…"

Further investigation of a figure on the right side of the mural reveals a device hidden inside that the player cannot reach. The mysterious voice instructs Oceana to push it. She does, and the mural slides open to reveal the Cavern’s entrance. The voice then relays one final message:

"Well...done...Oceana…

I…...am….s….pro….d….of…...you…

…………………….."

Upon exiting the cavern, the tremors are revealed to also be caused by the whales in the surrounding Zahhab Region attacking the stone surrounding the entrance to the Cavern. The team escapes just before a rockslide covers the entrance. The Song of Dragons fades and the team returns to the boat.

Jean-Eric expresses his concern and is glad that everyone is safe; he was unable to reach them inside the ruins for a long time. Oceana wonders aloud who was talking to the team during the cavern collapse.

Oceana looks out over the ocean and addresses her father, happy that he did not lose his life searching for something that did not exist. Hayako wants to let the whole world know about the Treasure; GG says that they should salvage it. Hayako also says that there are many unsolved mysteries in the Cavern, and their discoveries could “rewrite human history”.
