The Southern Elephant Seal is a species of land mammal seen in both Endless Ocean and Endless Ocean 2. Its scientific name is Mirounga Leonina.
"Easily recognised by its large, long nose, this seal is particularly large; a male can weigh over 2 tonnes. Females are smaller, growing up to 700kg. Their body is soft, which allows them to bend over backwards.
They are strong divers and can be underwater for up to two hours and reach depths of up to 2,000m.
Male elephant seals create a harem containing several females. If another male appears to be approaching a female, the resident male will swell its nose to make a loud, intimidating noise, then violently attack the intruder with his body."
Southern Elephant Seals will appear occasionally on the Gabbiano, usually in a pair.
These creatures can be found in the Weddell Sea at the B-4 coordinate, exclusively on land.
These creatures respond well to being offered food and being petted. In the second game, the player can obtain their trivia by offering them food.
- The Southern Elephant Seal, along with being the largest extant species of seal, is actually the largest carnivore alive; it weighs the most out of all carnivores (the largest ever recorded was estimated to weigh 5000 kilograms- that's 11000 pounds!) and is substantial in length (that same specimen was 6.85 meters, or 22.5 feet, long!). An average adult male Southern Elephant Seal actually weighs six or seven times more than even a polar bear or Kodiak bear!
- There is also a closely related species of seal that inhabits the western shores of North America, but does not appear in either of the Endless Ocean games: the Northern Elephant Seal, Mirounga Angustirostris.
